The wife, Aemma Targaryen dies with her infant son, causing immense grief to the King. The first season ends with Rhaenyra named as the heir, while any male Targaryen could argue a stronger claim.

Daemon, brother of Viserys, is shown as a contender. However, in the upcoming year, the birth of more Targaryens may challenge Rhaenyra’s place as heir. Alongside, Rhaenyra will have children of her as she goes to shore up her throne’s claim.

These births will be the hint for the future of the House of Targaryen. Hopefully, not all the birth scenes will be as horrific as the one which killed Aemma in the House of the Dragon’s episode one.

The scene of Aemma death during childbirth was necessary to set up further fights for the succession. It is important to notice that the women’s life holds very less value. House of the Dragons will use many birth scenes to discuss various issues and themes regarding women.

Scene Explained

Viserys chooses the son over his wife’s life in exchange for his son. This led to a tragic birth scene, where they the forced wife had to undergo a c-section. The show makes it clear that her life isn’t as important as that of a potential male heir.

The actress, Brooke, who played the role of Gemma, had to wear two different prosthetic bellies- one for her bathing scene and the other for the horrific birthing scene. She described the prosthetics as very real.

“They were incredibly lifelike, so much so I found myself walking and waddling around. My body must’ve thought, ‘Hellooo? Where are we now? We’re not going back there again, are we?’ They were quite weighty, but being pregnant you do feel quite weighted.”

As Aemma goes into labour, the fetus would not come out. Then the grand maester asks the Viserys to make a choice: either sacrifice one or lose one of them. The desperate king made a terrible choice and asked the maester to slice open Aemma’s stomach without anaesthesia and remove the baby safely.

To create this gruesome scene, bags full of blood was put under the prosthetic belly. When it was sliced, the cold and wet blood was seeping all over.

This scene took over a day and a half for shooting. Let’s see how the story will go onward.
