Alec Baldwin ‘Rust’ Case: What Does The FBI Say About His Gun Trigger Pulling?

Actor Alec Baldwin had maintained for months that he did not fire the gun that fatally shot a member of the crew when they were filming in New Mexico. However, fresh forensic data can present a different picture.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office is in charge of the investigation. The FBI recently completed and provided a report to them. Investigators found that the weapon could not be fired without pulling the trigger.

In a statement to NPR, Baldwin’s attorney described the FBI’s conclusions as “misconstrued”. Moreover, he added that the involved pistol was in “poor condition.”

According to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

What the latest FBI report shows

The FBI report states that the gun in question “could not be fired without a pull of the trigger.”

Baldwin’s attorney Luke Nikas stated that Baldwin didn’t know the set was unsafe. “He was told by the person in charge of safety on the set that the gun was ‘cold’ and believed the gun was safe.”

“The newly released FBI reports show the revolver was in good working order. And Baldwin had to have pulled the trigger to fire the revolver, directly contradicting his prior statements.” Gutierrez-attorney Reed’s Jason Bowles said in a statement to NPR

The request from Gutierrez-Reed to participate in cross-draw instruction could have prohibited pointing a weapon at anyone or having his finger on the trigger. According to Bowles, the instruction was “ignored”.

Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office informed NPR that detectives are currently awaiting and examining phone data. Following that, the district attorney will evaluate the case file and make any necessary final charging determinations.
