Actress Mary Mara, age 61, is dead according to reports. Well known for her roles in ER, and Law & Order, she had made quite a name for herself. What caused her death and how did it happen? Read on to find out.


The Cause of Death

Mary Mara was staying with her sister who was a resident at her summer home in the town of Cape Vincent, New York.

According to New York State Police’s press release, they responded to a call on Sunday at around 8:10 a.m. It was for a “possible drowning.” Troopers and Cape Vincent Fire and Ambulance arrived on the scene. In the statement, they gave they said they had “discovered a female deceased in the St. Lawrence River”. The St. Lawrence River is a waterbody that runs through the town of Cape Vincent.

Police Investigation and Medical Examination Reports

The female body identified was Mary Mara’s. According to NYSP, their “preliminary investigation suggests the victim drowned while swimming”. Further examination of the body also showed no signs of foul play. Therefore, they concluded it to be a case of accidental drowning.


They then transported the actress’s body to the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office. According to the police, the Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to perform an autopsy to determine the official cause of death. Currently, the investigation is still ongoing.

Mary Mara Lasting Legacy

Meanwhile, her manager, Craig Dorfman, has nothing but praises for the deceased actress to the press. He described her as an”electric, funny, and a true individual”. He continued on to say, “Mary was one of the finest actresses I ever met,” and that “Everyone loved her.”

Mara was born in Syracuse, New York. She studied acting at San Francisco State University and the Yale School of Drama and then went on to make her big-screen debut as Susan Bird in the TV movie “The Preppie Murder”. She went on to have a list of roles that covered television and film, including multi-episode roles on shows like “Dexter,” “The Practice” and “Star Trek: Enterprise.” She was arguably most recognizable for her roles on “Nash Bridges

,” “ER“, “Ray Donovan“, and “Law & Order“.

Mara’s final acting credit was a role in the 2020 action film “Break Even.”
