The victory kicked off the beginning of Joey’s eight-year run winning first place at Nathan’s Eating Contest.
He remained undefeated at Major League Eating with the exception of the year 2014. He ultimately managed to win back his title in the 2016 Championship.

Joey Chestnut Chokes Out An Animal Rights Activist
Three animal-rights protesters caused a minor disruption during the course of the 2022 contest. They attempted to charge to the middle of the stage while contestants were competing in order to draw attention to their protests.
However, the disturbance did not last longer than a few seconds as Joey decided to deal with the protestors himself. He managed to get one of the protestors into a headlock and pinned him to the ground.
Eventually, security carried the protestors off the stage. Joey and the other contestants continued to compete in the competition.
The animal rights activists were most probably protesting against the largest pork factory in the nation, Smithfield farm which supplied pork for the contest.
They were protesting against the farm’s unethical treatment of pigs. Smithfield farm has a history of controversies surrounding animal abuse.
