Margaret Urlich Career Remembered as The Horses Singer Died Aged 57

Margaret Urlich who has been a prominent and popular singer has died. She got fame after singing her most popular song The horses with Daryl Braithwaite in 1990 in Australia. She was born in New Zealand and died at the age of 57 at her home in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales.

After fighting a 2 year-long battle with cancer she has died today. She was the first solo female singer to land a number one hit song on the official New Zealand song album.


The Horses gave her fame and acquisition

Margaret became one of the most popular and successful artists in New Zealand. She also won an ARIA award in 1991 for becoming the first solo female artist who topped the New Zealand music chart.

Before joining New Zealand’s all-girl pop group(When The Cat’s Away) she made the beginning of her career with Peking man. She played the vocalist.

Her song The Horses was a number one hit and she regretted her decision not to appear in the music video. Model Gillian Bailey lip-synced her song lyrics in the music video.

Gillian also revealed in an interview that she was nicknamed Gilli Vanilli for a short period. She also told the reason why she couldn’t appear in the video.

She said “I was recording an album in London at that time. I never thought that this video song was so huge. It was my stupidity. 

I could come back to record the video if I wanted to, but I was busy doing my own thing at that point.

Then I was young and a bit stupid. thought whatever I did was right. But it was absolutely no disrespect to Daryl.”

Her number one hit song, The Horses took 4 months to reach number one rank in 1991. It constantly remained in the top 10 for 12 weeks.

Daryl Braithwaite once mentioned that she refused from filming the music video at the last moment because she had her own things to do.

Margaret Urlich Died from Cancer

2 years ago she was diagnosed with cancer and had been living with her life partner in Southern Highlands of New South Wales at the age of 57.

She fought a battle with cancer for two years and on Monday, August 22, 2022, she passed away and bid goodbye to this world.

It was commonly known among her musician peers and industry that her condition was serious but nobody made a public announcement at her family’s request.


Harwood said in an interview that Margaret is magic and she is the most extraordinarily talented musician, singer, and human.

She is so intelligent and when she comes onto the stage it’s like standing next to Prince.

He revealed the fact about Margaret that she can drum, she can play the piano, consummate music, and dance.

He has been working with her since 1986 and said “She never caused or became a problem for anyone. Her humility and gratitude which stood next to her talent was just a wonder to behold.”
