Recently, Nury Martinez resigned on Monday, October 10 from her position as a Los Angeles City Council President. This happened after a leaked video posted by a now-suspended Reddit user went viral. In that video, she was using racist slurs so what is the meaning of Parece Changuito?
Martinez steps down from her position
After watching this video, the council members, Mike Bonin, Paul Koretz and Nithya Ramanade an application for her resignation.
Nithya took to Twitter and expressed her disgust and said, “Racist, homophobic, and deeply cruel statements like these are disqualifying for elected office in L.A. The people who made them should resign. If they don’t, I’ll vote to remove them from council leadership at the first opportunity”.
Martinez resigned nearly a day after the video went public. Along with her, Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo, City Council members and labor leader Ron Herrera were also there in the video. This video was supposedly recorded about a year ago in October 2021.
Martinez publicly apologizes
The 49-year-old made a public apology regarding her remarks shortly after she resigned. Reported by Los Angeles Times.
“In a moment of intense frustration and anger, I let the situation get the best of me and I hold myself accountable for these comments. For that I am sorry”, Nury said.
She said, “I take responsibility for what I said and there are no excuses for those comments. I’m so sorry. In the end, it is not my apologies that matter most, it will be the actions I take from this day forward”.
“I hope you will give me the opportunity to make amends. Therefore, effective immediately, I am resigning as president of Los Angeles City Council”, she concluded.
What she really mean by Parece Changuito
In that video, she called white Council member Mike Bonin’s son “parece changuito”. The word literally translates to “like a monkey”, which is a derogatory term used for black people. Apart from that, she also said Bonin didn’t know how to raise his kid and that he treated his son as if he were an “accessory”.
Martinez said, “I see a lot of little short dark people. I was like, I don’t know where these people are from, I don’t know what village they came, how they got here. They’re ugly”.
She also said, “They’re raising him like a little white kid. I was like, this kid needs a beatdown. Let me take him around the corner, and then I’ll bring him back”.
Mike Bonin’s Statement
“We love our son, a beautiful, joyful child, and our family is hurting today. No child should ever be subjected to such racist, mean and dehumanizing comments, especially from a public official.”
Bonin also said that the country doesn’t need people like Martinez, De León and Herrera and that they should all resign.
