Twitter Users Pointing Disparity Between R Kelly and Ghislaine Maxwell’s Sentencing

Popular RnB singer R Kelly serving time in prison for the past three years is now facing a sentence of 30 years. This news comes after the court convicted him on all nine counts in a sex trafficking case. Internet users have taken to Twitter, pointing out the unfair difference between R Kelly and Ghislaine Maxwell’s sentencing.

R Kelly 2019 Arrest

On July 11, 2019, authorities arrested R Kelly. They were charging him with nine counts of committing some pretty serious and heinous acts. These included, one count of racketeering and eight counts of violating the Mann Act, which is a ‘slave trafficking’ act, according to Forbes reports. The trial that followed, found the Grammy-winning guilty of the charges.

The Charges And The Final Verdict

Victims and the court accused him of using his stardom to sexually abuse young fans. They recounted that it was a systematic scheme of abuse that lasted for many years. He has since, denied all the charges and accusations. Even while serving time in prison waiting for a conclusive sentence in the past three years, his fans continued to sell millions of albums. This is despite the heinous nature of his convictions. The Church has continued to be his loyal supporter through all of this as well.

However, on Wednesday 29th June, the court sentenced R Kelly to 30 years in prison. In the ruling, the judge told him that he has an “indifference to human suffering”. And also that “You left in your wake a trail of broken lives”. On hearing this verdict R Kelly who was present refused to give a statement. Although, according to his lawyer, he was “devastated” and “saddened” by the sentence.

Prosecutors had pushed for the singer to serve a sentence of more than 25 years in prison, while his attorneys pushed for ten years maximum. Now, Twitter users are pointing out the difference between R Kelly and Ghislaine Maxwell’s prison sentences. Both the sentences took place this week. Maxwell was to serve a sentence of 20 years in a US prison. BBC reports, that the court convicted her of helping disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein to abuse young girls.

Speculations of Systematic Racial Discrimination

The assumption of those Twitter users was that Maxwell had received a ten-year-shorter sentence than Kelly despite committing similarly heinous crimes. Their reasoning for this is that Maxwell enjoys the advantages of white privilege. While R Kelly is a black male from a poor background and hence, is at a disadvantage due to prevalent racial discrimination in the system.

A Twitter user commented, “R Kelly got a longer sentence than Ghislaine Maxwell, let that sink in”. Another added, “I hate to play the race card because I usually think it’s bull****, but why does R Kelly get a life while Ghislaine Maxwell got only 20 years”.
