Who was Amedeo Modigliani
Amedeo Modigliani early life
Amedeo Modigliani was born on July 12, 1884, in Livorno, Italy. His family was once a wealthy renowned name but due to a financial upturn, they became poor. Modigliani suffered from pleurisy and typhus during his childhood. He got affected with tuberculosis which later turned out to be the cause of his death.
His mother played an instrumental role in his career designing. She travelled with him to various picturesque locations and thus he was able to witness some of the greatest artists’ paintings around the world. Her mother took him to see the paintings in the Palazzo Pitti and the Uffizi in Florence. She also enrolled him under the best painting master in Livorno, Guglielmo Micheli. Amedeo worked in Micheli’s Art School from 1898 to 1900. He studied landscapes, portraiture, still life, and the nudes there.
Modigliani traveled to Venice and in 1906, he moved to Paris where he stayed most of his lifetime. Modigliani was not only a painter but also an extremely talented sculptor. He was even selected to exhibit in the Salon d’Automne in 1912 which was a great honour for a young artist at the time.
He is mostly known for his portraits of nudes with elongated faces and limbs. Amedeo portrayed women as unapologetic modern women who are a symbol of sexuality, in control of their bodies and livelihoods. Some saw his works as a symbol of defiance because of the bold poses and unapologetic stares of the women in his works. He was deeply indulged in affairs, drugs, alcohol and hashish in his later years.
Modigliani and Jeanne Hébuterne
In 1917 Modigliani started living with a young painter named Jeanne Hébuterne. They loved each other deeply. Their daughter, Jeanne, was born in November 1918. They were even engaged at one point. But His tuberculosis got severe and he died on 24 January 1920 aged-35. A day later, inconsolable Hébuterne killed herself and their unborn eight-month-old child by jumping from a window. In 1930, her body was buried beside Modigliani with a single tombstone honouring both.
Amedeo Modigliani works
His paintings were mostly neglected during his life but vast fame came after his death. A solo exhibition was organised at the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery in 1922 and later his biography was written by Salmon. His works are deeply overshadowed by his tragic life but now he is often acknowledged as one of the most significant and original artists of his time. Some of his most famous works are, Reclining Nude, Gypsy Woman with Baby, Portrait of Jeanne Hebuterne, Alice etcetera.
The movie is a slice of Modi’s life and not a biography. It follows the artist over a transformative 48 hours during his time in Paris in 1916. It also features fellow artists Maurice Utrillo and Chaïm Soutine, as well as poet Beatrice Hastings who was Modigliani’s lover (and model) at the time. “The saga of Mr. Modigliani’s life is one that I’m incredibly honored, and truly humbled, to bring to the screen,” Depp said in the release.
