On August 12, Friday, Salman Rushdie was attacked at a book event in New York’s Chautauqua Institution. The New York police took in a 24-year-old man named Hadi Matar as a suspect. Hadi is from Fairview, New Jersey, who stabbed the author moments after he sat in his chair on stage.

A UK-based best-selling author of Indian descent attended a book event. There when about to be introduced on stage was attacked by Matar.


Who is Hadi Matar?

The police arrested Hadi Matar, a 24-year-old man who jumped on stage and attacked Salman Rushdie after his introduction. The suspect stabbed at least twice, once in the neck and once in the abdomen. Hadi had a pass to enter the grounds exactly the way any other guest would have. The president of the Chautauqua Institute in New York told police the attacker was among the gusets


Bradley Fisher, who was in the crowd, said that “a man leaped up on the stage from I don’t know where and started what looked like pounding him on the chest. This went on repetitively, fist strikes into his chest and neck.”

Law enforcement’s early investigation of Matar’s social media accounts revealed that he was sympathetic to Shia extremism and the goals of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The motive for the attack is not yet clear. Also, the investigation is in the process while the weapon is not revealed. The police said they are acquiring search warrants for different items. According to them, there was a backpack present at the time of the crime and some electronic devices.

Although Matar and the IRGC have no known connections, law enforcement officials are said to have discovered photographs of the murdered commander Qassem Solemani and an extremist who supports the Iranian government in Iraq on Hadi Matar’s cell phone.

Salman Rushdie attacked during an event

Salman Rushdie a Bombay-born author who lives in the UK faced an attack on Friday. The 75-year-old author has received various death threats before. His book ‘The Satanic Verses’ became the reason for his threat from the Islamists.


Shortly after its release, the book was outlawed in a number of nations, including India, and the then-Supreme Leader of Iran issued a fatwa condemning Rushdie.


The author was taken to the hospital in a helicopter. There he underwent surgeries for his injuries. Rushdie might lose an eye as a result of the assault, according to his literary agent Andrew Wylie. Wylie continued, saying that when Rushdie was stabbed in the torso, the nerves in his arms were cut and his liver was hurt.

The police along with the FBI and sheriff’s office are figuring out the cause and motive behind the attack.
