Elnaz Rekabi, An Iranian Sport Climber’s Bio, Career, Dating Life Explored

Elnaz Rekabi, 33, a female Iranian climber, recently caused attention for not wearing hijab during her competition. On Monday, her passport and mobile phone were confiscated. The sources confirm that she left her hotel in Seoul. However, it was two days before her original date. She told her family and friends that she was with an Iranian official after which they lost her contact.


Who is Elnaz Rekabi ?

Elnaz Rekabi is a famous sport climber who hails from Iran. In 2021, she participated in the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Championship. It was held in Moscow, Russia. She got a bronze medal for her extraordinary performance in women’s combined event.

She was born in 20 August 1989 in Zanjan, Iran. When talking about her IFSC Climbing Asian Championship, she has secured a total of three medals. The first one was in 2013 in Tehran, where she secured the silver medal in a bouldering event.

In 2014, she was awarded the bronze medal for a Lead event in Lombok. Lastly, the authorities awarded her with the bronze medal for her outstanding performance in the Speed relay event. It was held in 2016 in Duyun.

In 2022, however, she secured the fourth position. But, instead of her performance, this event for famous for her defying the dress code of Iran. Besides, she participated in the event without a headscarf which is considered to be the mandatory clothing in Iran.

Full controversy explained

The decision by the 33 year old climber came as the protests against the Iranian government reached its fifth week. These protests were the result of death of Mahsa Amini in September 16 who was arrested and then tortured by the morality police for her inappropriate dress code.

Many people took to their respective social media accounts to commend her on her bravery. However, according to Elnaz Rekabi, the scarf fell off by mistake while she was climbing.

“Due to bad timing, and the unanticipated call for me to climb the wall, my head covering inadvertently came off. I apologize for getting everybody worried”, an Instagram post on Tuesday said.

Was her apology fake?

Many people speculated that the kind of language used in the post looked like it was written under pressure. Many Iranian sportswomen also said that they were pressurized to issue a public apology by Iranian authorities for not wearing hijab abroad.


Meanwhile, Iran Embassy in Seoul took to Twitter and informed about the whole situation. “Ms. Elnaz REKABI, departed from Seoul to Iran, early morning of October 18, 2022, along with the other members of the Team”, the post read.

“The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in South Korea strongly denies all the fake, false news and disinformation regarding Ms. Elnaz REKABI”, it concluded.

“It is important to stress that athletes’ safety is paramount for us and we support any efforts to keep a valued member of our community safe in this situation. The IFSC fully support the rights of athletes, their choices, and expression of free speech”, IFSC said in their post.
