Simona Halep retired from the game due to illness and clearly wasn’t feeling the way she used to. From the beginning of the game, it was clear something was wrong as she looked uncomfortable the entire time.

Who is Simona Halep?

Simona Halep is a professional tennis player based in Romania. Born in September 1991, she has been ranked No. 1 all around the world in singles twice (2017 and 2019). She’s a right-handed player (two-handed-backhand), coached by Patrick Mouratoglou currently, and previously coached by Darren Cahill.

With her personality it’s very obvious, that Simona has opened up a charitable foundation focusing on sport, health, and education.

What went wrong in Washington Open?

The 2022 Washington Open a.k.a. the Citi Open is currently being organized in Washington, DC. The tournament is supposed to take place from August 1 till August 7 at the William HG Fitzgerald Tennis Center.

America’s hard-court season- allows players to prepare for the upcoming US Open. Two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep joined this week and her 16 bout faced weird circumstances.

The third-placed Romanian player faced Anna Kalinskaya in Round 16 of the City Open. But, the former world’s No. 1 backed of from the match after a draw (5-7, 0-2) . Furthermore, fans wondered what happened to Simona Halep when her opponent advanced to the next round. It definitely didn’t feel like it used to. It was clear from the start of the game that something was wrong with her as she looked uncomfortable the entire time.

Some fans speculate that the extremely hot and humid conditions on the pitch played a role.

The Romanian Tennis player’s Twitter account shared a video of Halep appearing to be struggling with the heat. Her fans saw Simona looking tired and down because of the unbearable heat.

The Russian took a 2-0 lead from 15-40 in Game 2 of the game. She again broke Halep to her 3-0 lead and after holding it again she was now 4-0. Then it was time for Halep to play better. Groundstrokes started to hit and she went back up to 3-4 while Kalinskaya held her serve 5-3.

From there, Halep again made her 5-5 mini-run and she finished 3-4. It was her 40-0 serve at her 5-all. And she threw it away by losing five points in a row to drop the serve. Kalinskaya finished the game 7-5 and took an immediate 2-0 lead in the final set. Halep has since retired from the game.
